Quick answer

Actions in progress at a moment in the past. Affirmative: S + was/were + V-ing; Negative: S + was/were + not + V-ing; Interrogative: Was/Were + S + V-ing? Signal words: while, when, as, at 5 PM yesterday, at that time, all morning/afternoon.

When to use the past continuous

1. Actions in progress at a moment in the past

Describes an action in progress at a specific moment in the past.

At 9 PM, I was watching a movie.

2. Interrupted actions

A longer action in the past continuous is interrupted by a shorter one in the past simple.

I was cooking when the phone rang.

3. Parallel actions

Two or more actions happening at the same time in the past.

While I was studying, my brother was playing games.
