Quick answer

How long an action had lasted before another past action. Affirmative: S + had + been + V-ing; Negative: S + had + not + been + V-ing; Interrogative: Had + S + been + V-ing? Signal words: for, since, all day/week, before, by the time, how long.

When to use the past perfect continuous

1. Duration before a past event

Stresses how long something had been going on before another past action.

I had been studying for three hours when she called.

2. The cause of a past result

A continuous past action that produced a visible result.

She was tired because she had been running.

3. Reporting an ongoing action

Used in reported speech for an action that was in progress.

She said she had been waiting for over an hour.
