How your HSK 6 score is calculated

Engame converts your share of correct answers to the 300-point scale: score = correct answers ÷ 100 × 300, rounded. 180 or more is shown as a pass.

Correct answers (of 100)Engame scoreResult shown
50150/300below the pass mark
60180/300pass
70210/300pass
80240/300pass

At this level a pass is not the usual goal: universities and employers who ask for HSK 6 often expect well above 180, so read the estimate as a range rather than a verdict.

What HSK 6 means

HSK 6 is the top level of the six-level HSK 2.0 system. The syllabus describes understanding written and spoken Chinese with ease and expressing yourself fluently in speech and writing. The word list exceeds 5,000 words, and texts are full of four-character idioms (成语) and literary connectors.

In the 2010 table HSK 6 is mapped to CEFR C2. Many teachers regard it as closer to C1, and it is not a native-speaker certificate: a strong reader with good exam technique can pass while still speaking hesitantly, because there is no speaking section.

Typical candidates are translators, teachers of Chinese, postgraduate applicants and professionals who work in Chinese. The testing body has published a newer nine-band standard (HSK 3.0) with an advanced exam for bands 7 to 9, so check with your test centre which format your session uses.

Translation

Master Lin has worked in the museum's restoration room for twenty-six years. His job is to restore ancient paintings damaged by age. Many people think restoration means making a painting "look as good as new", but Master Lin doesn't see it that way. "What we do is help it live longer, not make it younger," he says. When a painting from several hundred years ago has yellowed paper and faded colors, these are traces left by history; if you casually repaint it to make it look nicer, you actually destroy its authenticity. So in his work he insists on the principle of "restoring the old as old": whatever can be left alone is left alone, and where something must be filled in, the materials used must be close to the original and must be removable in the future. In his view, the first thing a restorer must learn is not technique but restraint. Once, to find a suitable kind of old paper, he traveled to several provinces and spent more than half a year. When a young colleague felt it wasn't worth it, he just smiled: "If we put in a little more effort today, later generations will get to see a little more of the real thing."
