Background and mild contrast (-(으)ㄴ/는데): Korean Grammar with Examples

Quick answer

-(으)ㄴ/는데 is a versatile connecting ending: it supplies background, marks a mild contrast, or simply leads into what comes next. It is softer than -지만 and needs no clear opposition. 1. Background before making a request

지금 밖에 있는데 잠깐 기다려 주세요.
I am out at the moment, so please wait a little.

2. Mild contrast

Softer than -지만; it only hints at a contrast

음식이 맛있는데 양이 적어요.
The food is good, but the portions are small.

3. Leading into a story

Opening a story or leading into new information

어제 친구를 만났는데 정말 오래됐어요.
I met a friend yesterday - it had been a very long time.

1. Give the background: 바쁘다 + a request: 지금 ___ 내일 만날까요?

Options: 바쁘는데 · 바쁘은데 · 바쁜는데 · 바쁜데

바쁜데. 바쁘다 is an adjective whose stem ends in a vowel, so it takes ㄴ데: 바쁜데 (는데 is only for verbs and 있다/없다). The sentence means "I am busy now, so shall we meet tomorrow?"

2. Mild contrast: 맛있다 + 양이 적다: 이 음식은 맛있___ 양이 적어요.

4. Choose the correct sentence: 'I am a student, so I have no money.'

Options: 학생는데 돈이 없어요. · 학생은데 돈이 없어요. · 학생이는데 돈이 없어요. · 학생인데 돈이 없어요.

학생인데 돈이 없어요.. Noun + 인데 (이다 becomes 인데): 학생인데 means "being a student...". 는데 or 은데 never attach directly to a noun. The sentence means "I am a student, so I do not have money."

5. Choose the best use of 는데 (background, then asking an opinion):
