Polite present tense (-아/어/여요): Korean Grammar with Examples

Everything you need to use polite present tense (-아/어/여요) correctly: the patterns, when to use them, examples with audio, common mistakes and exercises with answers.

Quick answer

아/어/여요 is the polite (해요체) ending for verbs and adjectives in everyday conversation. Which one you take follows vowel harmony: if the last vowel of the stem is ㅏ or ㅗ → 아요; any other vowel → 어요; and 하다 verbs → 해요. Key patterns: Bright-vowel stem + 아요; Dark-vowel stem + 어요; Every 하다 compound verb becomes 해요.

How to use Polite present tense (-아/어/여요)

1. Actions happening now, or regularly

Expresses an action in the present, or a habit

저는 매일 운동해요.
I exercise every day.

2. Questions, marked by rising intonation

The form is the same; only the intonation changes

지금 뭐 해요?
What are you doing now?

1. Put 먹다 (to eat) into the polite form: 저는 밥을 ___.

Options: 먹아요 · 먹어요 · 먹요 · 먹해요

먹어요. 먹다: the stem 먹 ends in ㄱ and its vowel is ㅓ, so it takes 어요: 먹 + 어요 = 먹어요.

2. Put 공부하다 (to study) into the polite form: 저는 한국어를 ___.
