To be / not to be (이다/아니다): Korean Grammar with Examples

Everything you need to use to be / not to be correctly: the patterns, when to use them, examples with audio, common mistakes and exercises with answers.

Quick answer

이다 is the Korean copula, the equivalent of 'to be' in English, and it attaches only to nouns. Its negative is 아니다. The polite forms are 이에요 (after a consonant) and 예요 (after a vowel); the formal forms are 입니다/아닙니다. Key patterns: Noun ending in a consonant + 이에요; Noun ending in a vowel + 예요; Noun + the particle 이/가 + 아니에요.

How to use To be / not to be

1. Introducing yourself or someone else

Use 이에요/예요 for jobs, nationality and identity

이분은 제 친구예요.
This person is my friend.

2. Denying a job or an identity

Noun + 이/가 + 아니에요. Never use 은/는 before 아니에요

그 사람은 학생이 아니에요.
That person is not a student.

3. Asking who someone is

Ask with 뭐예요? or 누구예요?

이게 뭐예요?
What is this?
