Wanting to do something (-고 싶다): Korean Grammar with Examples

Quick answer

-고 싶다 expresses the wish to do something, the equivalent of 'want to...'. It attaches only to verbs, never to adjectives. First and second person take -고 싶다; the third person takes -고 싶어하다. Key patterns: Verb stem + 고 싶어요; Verb stem + 고 싶어해요 (third person); Stem + 고 싶지 않아요.

How to use Wanting to do something (-고 싶다)

1. Saying what you want to do

Only used with action verbs

한국어를 잘하고 싶어요.
I want to speak Korean well.

2. A wish you had in the past

Use -고 싶었어요 for a wish you had in the past

어렸을 때 가수가 되고 싶었어요.
When I was little I wanted to be a singer.
